A gradual loss of bone mass resulting in increased fractures, loss of height, pain in the hip and back, and spinal curvature. The main causes of osteoporosis are: inability to absorb sufficient amounts of calcium; a calcium-phosphorus imbalance; lack of exercise; prolonged jaundice; gastrectomy; and lactose intolerance.
Dietary Strategy:
Avoid refined sugars, caffeine, alcohol, and soft drinks. Eat a low-fat diet with moderate protein (less than half of total calories).
