Cranial Osteopathy

William Garner Sutherland, a student of Dr Still, discovered that the 26 bones of the skull were connected by modified joints which allowed a tiny amount of rhythmic motion between them. This motion takes place not only in the skull but throughout the whole body and appears fundamental to its healthy functioning. Because it is separate from the motion of breathing, it is called "primary respiration", and in areas of the body that are diseased, injured or in any way disturbed, this respiration will be dampened. The aim of treatment is therefore to restore this healthy pattern of motion throughout the body. Using a highly trained sense of touch and awareness, the osteopath "listens" to the body and supports the body's self-regulating system as it finds its way to restore health. In this respect each treatment in unique. Training in this approach may begin during undergraduate years, but is generally continued at postgraduate level.
