The Principles of HOMOEOPATHY - literally meaning 'like cures like' from Greek - date back to the fifth century BC. It is a medical system that uses infinitesimal doses of natural substances - called remedies - to stimulate a person's immune and defense system. A remedy is individually chosen for a sick person based on its capacity to cause, if given in overdose, physical and psychological symptoms similar to those a patient is experiencing. Common and irritating symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, colds and coughs and allergies respond best to homoeopathic remedies. Some chronic conditions, such as psoriasis and eczma, stress-related, emotional and mental disorders have been helped with homoeopathy. Homoeopathy is the third most commonly used complementary therapy in the U.K., with five National Health Service homoeopathic hospitals.
