Utilizing fatty acids as fuel
Carnitine L-Tartrate is an amino acid-like nutrient naturally found in the human body, mainly stored in skeletal and cardiac muscle. Studies suggest that this compound may aid in body fat loss by facilitating the utilization of fatty acids as fuel. Pregnant women who supplement with L-Carnitine L-Tartrate may be at a reduced risk of developing gestational diabetes, according to a new study by University of Vienna researchers.
Scientists noted that certain enzymes involved in fatty acid metabolism do not function effectively when pregnant women are deficient in carnitine from the 12th week of gestation through delivery. Low levels of these enzymes promote an increase in free fatty acid levels, which can lead to insulin resistance. When pregnant women were supplemented with L-carnitine tartrate, the researchers measured increased levels of the enzymes involved in protecting against insulin resistance. The study indicates that L-carnitine may be involved in insulin metabolism during pregnancy, especially in women adhering to a low meat or vegetarian diet.
