Citicoline is cytidine 5'-diphosphate choline. Citicoline plays a crucial role in the Kennedy pathway, by which the body synthesizes phosphatidylcholine (PC) and, ultimately, other phospholipids, such as phosphatidylserine (PS). By supporting the body's synthesis of new phospholipids in youthful, physiological balance, Citicoline supports brain structure. Extensive research supports the role of Citicoline in supporting optimal cognitive function.

Directions for use: Take two to four capsules daily with/without food, or as directed by a qualified health care practitioner.

Food for the Brain
Citicoline is a source of choline, a nutrient with an important role in the production of phospholipids, which are integral components of cellular membranes. Phospholipid balance in brain cells is critical to brain function. Citicoline supports both the synthesis of new phospholipids and the effective use of phospholipids from food or supplements to produce a youthful balance in the brain's structure. Citicoline also increases the production and release of important neurotransmitters such as serotonin and acetylcholine.

Supports the Brain's Functions
Clinical trials have found that Citicoline is beneficial in a wide range of cognitive disorders including Alzheimer's disease, stroke, dementia associated with Parkinson's disease, and head trauma. Citicoline also has benefits for healthy people who are suffering from age-associated memory decline.

For a Healthy Mind
Citicoline is a helpful nutrient for optimal cognitive function. By regulating phospholipid and neurotransmitter production, and by increasing energy supplies to critical regions of the brain, Citicoline helps to keep the mind at its best.

Citicoline is cytidine diphosphate choline, or CDP-choline. It is a source of choline (the main building block of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine) and a brain phospholipid booster. The most popular and well-known brain phospholipid supplement is phosphatidylserine (PS). However, brain function relies on a wide spectrum of phospholipids, and taking individual phospholipids cannot restore the youthful balance of all brain phospholipids.

Citicoline works by enhancing the brain's ability to synthesize its own phospholipids. Studies show that Citicoline boosts brain and neural PS by 37.2%, PC by 22-30%, PI by 16%, and PE by 11-13%. By supporting the brain's ability to make its own phospholipids, Citicoline increases levels of all phospholipids in neural membranes without altering the healthy, youthful proportions of the various phospholipids.

At the same time, new research suggests that Citicoline allows the body to make better use of phospholipids derived directly from the diet or supplements. When you take phospholipid supplements, the fatty acid "tails" have to be modified so that they meet the specific needs of the local tissue. Citicoline facilitates this "customization" process. As well, Citicoline increases the production or release of key neurotransmitters, including acetylcholine, norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin.

Trials have documented the powerful support provided by Citicoline supplementation in Alzheimer's disease, stroke, dementia associated with Parkinson's disease, and head trauma. Citicoline has also been shown to improve the odds of a good outcome after high-risk brain surgery.

Most importantly for healthy people looking to maintain, protect, boost, or restore healthy brain function, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials have also shown that Citicoline significantly improves memory function in persons with "normal" age-associated memory impairment (AAMI).

In one such trial, older subjects who were experiencing problems with their memory, but who were not suffering dementia were given Citicoline supplements. The results showed that Citicoline significantly improves performance on several memory tasks.

In another randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, Citicoline supplements were given to older volunteers with no active psychiatric or neurological disorders, and who were within the normal range on tests of mental status. The subjects with poorer memory at baseline showed improvements in recall. In an additional study, higher dose Citicoline was "clearly associated with improved immediate and delayed logical memory."

When researchers looked at MRIs of patients at the beginning and end of a six week Citicoline supplementation period, they found that supplies of brain energy were increased in critical regions of the brain.

Neurons Beyond the Brain
Preliminary evidence suggests that Citicoline is helpful with many non-brain conditions grounded in neurological dysfunction. A study of patients with glaucoma showed that Citicoline has positive effects on optic nerve damage and helps to nourish nerves.

Likewise, amblyopia, or "lazy eye," is ultimately a neurological disorder, in which Citicoline may offer hope. Trials in patients with amblyopia, have confirmed that Citicoline significantly improves both symptoms and neurological function, and can be used to increase the effectiveness of occlusion (the standard therapy for "lazy eye").

With ongoing research, we may expect the fulfillment of some present promises, and the discovery of new applications for this remarkable nutrient.
